That week it arrived I must have read it to her about 30 times. She absolutely loves this story. I highly recommend this sweet story about a mommy rabbit's love for her baby rabbit. I made the mistake of ordering this book along with a pre-ordered book and had to wait 3 months to get it. My 3 yr old daughter was on pins and needles when it finally arrived.
Psalm 139 speaks to the ever-present God. I told the kids they could substitute God or any of their family members into this story and know that they are never alone as they embark on life's journey. I love this book and it's message. Although this is a children's book I purchased it as a Graduation gift. Along with it I gave a synopsis of Psalm 139 which I got from the internet.
My husband died when my children were all pre-schoolers, and I found this book to have a comforting message. As far as the wind analogy is concerned, who would let a child walk into traffic or jump out of a window.
My sons all have advanced degrees and are employed, so I don't think this story impacted them in any negative way; in fact, they all live far away and I haven't made any attempts to reset their sails in my direction - but they know they can come home anytime they want and I visit them as often as my job allows. Her ability to guide her child to safety and eventually to adult-hood seems evident here - that's what parents are for.
All my sons are grown now, and I have 4 grand-children with one on the way. I feel that the mother's desire is to keep her little one safe, not squash his unique abilities or his quest for autonomy.
I think some of the negative reviews are from people who have had poor social and familial relationships or who have never been a parent themselves - I hope that new mom who returned the book has the perfect child and never gets talked back to and never has anyone threaten to run away; then she won't have to endure the scenerios depicted in this book and her child can grow up unrestrained and self-disciplined. I never imagined how this story line could be interpreted as 'creepy' or 'controlling'.
If you've ever seen children cry when separated from a parent on the first day of school, or heard a child scream in the night from a scary dream, you should understand this calming story indicates that a parent's love is ongoing wherever the child may be.
I have purchased it for my soon to be granddaughter and can't wait to starting to her. After hearing this story read in unorthodox content, the movie Wit, many times I thought it was a wonderful story on so many levels.
The board book version is the perfect size for new "readers." It's a great one to cuddle up with before naptime. This touching, classic story is beautifully illustrated.
